FAQs
What is the Center for Informed Grief?
1
The Center for Informed Grief is an education and training organization founded by Kelly Daugherty, LCSW, Fellow in Thanatology, dedicated to improving the quality of grief support across schools, clinical practice, healthcare, and communities. We provide evidence-informed trainings, professional development, online courses, practical resources, and community programs — all grounded in current grief research and trauma-informed principles.
We are not a therapy practice. For individual grief counseling and clinical services, visit www.glgrief.com
What does “grief-informed” mean?
2
Grief-informed means understanding how loss shapes every part of a person’s life — their identity, relationships, nervous system, executive functioning, and sense of the future. A grief-informed approach moves beyond simplistic or outdated ideas about grief and instead uses current research to guide practical, compassionate support. At the Center for Informed Grief, we train professionals and educate communities to respond to grief with that depth of understanding.
What is the difference between the Center for Informed Grief and Kelly’s therapy practice?
3
Center for Informed Grief, LLC is an education and training organization. It is separate from Kelly Daugherty, LCSW, PLLC, which is Kelly’s private clinical practice offering individual therapy, grief retreats, and clinical services. If you are a grieving individual looking for direct therapeutic support, please reach out through www.glgrief.com. Everything offered through the Center for Informed Grief is educational in nature.

What grief support programs does the Center for Informed Grief offer for schools?
6
1 in 11 children will experience the death of a parent or sibling by time they turn 18 years old. Many school have never trained their staff in grief and loss. We offer grief education and training specifically designed for K–12 schools, school counselors, and educators, including:
• In-person and virtual staff development trainings on children, adolescents, and grief
• Training and consultation for school counselors on supporting grieving students
• Online courses for professionals working with grieving children
• Grief journals for grieving children and teens, covering death, divorce, pet loss, and anticipatory grief
We can work with individual school counselors, school teams, or entire districts.
How do we know if our school community needs grief support training?
7
If your school has students who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, grandparent, or peer — and the honest answer is yes, most schools do — your staff can benefit from grief-informed training. Research consistently shows that bereaved students experience academic disruption, social withdrawal, and behavioral changes that are often misidentified as other issues. When educators and counselors understand grief, they can respond in ways that genuinely help. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from building this skill set.
What is GRIEF Ladies?
8
GRIEF Ladies is a program of the Center for Informed Grief. It is a grief education podcast and community co-hosted by Kelly Daugherty, LCSW, and Karyn Arnold of Grief in Common. Each episode answers real questions about grief, loss, identity, relationships, and coping — without clichés or outdated models.
While the Center for Informed Grief focuses on professional training and education, GRIEF Ladies extends that work into accessible, public-facing support for individuals navigating grief. Both are grounded in evidence-informed grief education and practical application.
